A man was arrested after a man and woman were fatally shot Friday morning in a Henderson neighborhood near where a woman was shot and killed the day before.

A caller told police they heard gunshots around 7 a.m. in the 1000 block of Center Street, near East Lake Mead Parkway and East Warm Springs Road, and saw someone run to a vehicle before driving away, Henderson Police Department Capt. Haven Tillmon told reporters during a briefing near the scene.

Officers found two people, a man and woman both in their 30s, dead from gunshot wounds, Tillmon said. Late Friday morning, police had several units of the nearby Cascade apartment complex taped off.

As officers responded to the shooting, Tillmon said, the vehicle that fled the complex crashed near Lake Mead Parkway and Lake Las Vegas Parkway. Police responded to the crash and took a man into custody, Tillmon said.

Tillmon declined to provide a description of the person taken into custody, but police later in the day identified the man as Andre Thigpen, 22, according to a news release.

“Thigpen was booked on two counts of open murder and charges related to a hit-and-run,” the news release said. Henderson Detention Center records also showed that Thigpen faces multiple counts of discharging a firearm from within a structure or from within a vehicle, as well as a count of driving without a driver’s license.

Tillmon did not provide a motive, and said police were still investigating the shooting. Tillmon did not say whether a weapon had been recovered. He said the shooting was unrelated to a shooting that occurred Thursday at the adjacent Hampton Court apartments, where a woman in her 40s was killed.

Brandon Jones, who lives at the Cascade complex, said he left his apartment after dropping his kids off at school Friday to go for a ride on his e-scooter. Jones said he returned shortly after to a large police presence and officers cordoning off nearby units.

“I came back and all of this was here,” Jones said.

Jones added he, his fiancée and their two children moved to the complex from Chicago a few months ago. He said the recent fatal shootings has him questioning the safety of the area.

“I can’t say I expected it here in Henderson,” Jones said. “But I guess it happens everywhere.”

Cedric Thomas, a resident of the nearby Hampton Court apartments, where Thursday’s fatal shooting took place, rode a mobility scooter to the adjacent Cascade complex Friday morning. He said he knew the woman who was shot Thursday, but did not identify her by name.

“I feel bad,” Thomas said. “I mean, three people lost their lives.”

At least five people have died from gun violence in Henderson this week. In addition to the fatal shootings on Thursday and Friday, police responded to a murder-suicide on Tuesday involving a couple in their 70s in the 2000 block of Tiger Links Drive, near West Horizon Ridge and Sunridge Heights parkways.

The Clark County coroner’s office on Thursday identified the couple as Barbara Britt, 70, and Michael Britt, 72. The coroner’s office ruled Barbara Britt’s death a homicide by a gunshot wound to the head, and ruled Michael Britt’s death a suicide, also by a gunshot wound to the head.

Detectives said they believe the man shot and killed the woman before turning the gun on himself.

Tillmon urged anyone to call police if they fear for their safety.

“The police are here for you,” Tillmon said. “If you’re experiencing any danger, any domestic violence, anything, this is what we’re here for. Please reach out.”
