With DMV’s streamlined online services, ‘there’s no gotchas’
NEVADA
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has launched a service that lets new residents register out-of-state vehicles online.
People who purchase a vehicle from an out-of-state dealer or private party are also eligible to use the new online service.
Nevadans were already able to register cars purchased from in-state dealers using the DMV website. The program was expanded starting Dec. 6 to include out-of-state vehicles.
With the new service, the only trip required to a DMV office is to pay for the registration and pick up the license plate.
The DMV conducted a fourmonth trial run of the new program before formally launching it. Over 4,000 people registered their vehicles online during the trial period, officials said.
“The many transactions that have already been completed in just a few short months shows how much our customers want DMV services to be moved online,”
DMV Director Tonya Laney said in a statement. “You can do it from your living room and it is so easy, fast and convenient.”
After uploading documents online, people are assigned a DMV technician. That means that if there are any errors, such as a missing signature, people will be quickly notified, DMV Public Information Officer Hailey Foster said.
“You don’t have to leave the DMV, wait another month to make an appointment and come back,” Foster said. “And then once you do have to come back to the office to pay and pick up your plate, you are guaranteed to leave with them. There’s no gotchas.”
Nevadans can expect more DMV services to be moved online in the near future, she said. While residents can already renew their license and registration online, people will soon be able to file title releases as well.
“It really just eliminates the trip of having to come into the office and bring all that paperwork with you,” Foster said. kyle.chouinard@gmgvegas. com / 702-990-8923 / @Kyle_Chouinard
